Chapter 26 – Demons Come

___________________________

More dwarves, their armor covered in blood, came running out of the double doors leading to the demonic gate. Explosion after explosion rocked the cavern, sending stones and dust flying in all directions.

“Form your lines!” shouted Queen Emerald.

Five hundred dwarven soldiers in holy metal armor lined up on either side of their queen, backed up by elf, gnome, and dwarf mages along with humans in Intergalactic Empire uniforms carrying phase and plasma weapons. Two Warcat UHAAV’s positioned themselves on either side of the doorway, waiting for the first of the demons to come through.

Richard opted not to wait. He’d been a space marine, and there were still guards on the other side of the double doorway covering the retreat of their friends. He hadn’t left comrades to die when he’d been a space marine, and he didn’t plan on starting now. With a thought he switched his visor to night-vision filter and flicked the control for his phase rod to full destructive mode. Jumping past squads of armored dwarves as they formed a shield wall around their queen, he made for the double doors. He didn’t go alone. The shrunken giants General Veernor and Shaman Blackroot in their human-sized polymorph forms went with him. So did the redhaired Questria and the blonde ranger Chancee.

The tunnel beyond the doorway was full of green smoke and shadowy figures running every which way. Screams, yells, and roars filled the air. Flashes of spells and counter-spells could be seen reflecting off the stone walls through the dense smoke. Stocky, chest-high forms crashed into Richard. With a helpful shove from his battle suit’s arms he sent the fleeing dwarves heading in the direction of the exit.

“I can’t see,” Richard told his battle computer in their shared space.

“I am switching your battle helmet’s filter to radiation mode,” replied Nickelo. “I could have told you it would work better than the night-vision filter you selected, but since you decided to act without discussing the situation with me first, I decided it would be best to let you figure it out for yourself.”

The view from Richard’s battle helmet changed from a reddish tint to a white background with black figures. He spotted something dark that definitely didn’t look like a dwarf or a human. That is, at least a dwarf or human who didn’t have three heads and octopus-like tendrils sprouting out of their shoulders in place of arms. Swinging out with his phase rod, he aimed for the center of the three heads. The dark figure fell back, roaring as it did. A long tendril came snaking through the bedlam in Richard’s direction. Two hits with his phase rod drove it back the way it’d come.

“You have your .44 caliber AutoMag in your right hand,” said Nickelo in near instantaneous battle-speak. “I suggest using it. You should have summoned an M12 or your M63 assault rifle from your pack before you came charging in here.”

“Well, I didn’t,” Richard snapped back using the same battle-speak.
