Chapter 20

Alba

The witches seemed terrified to leave my powers unattended for one second longer and concluded we should start with my lessons right away.

“Let’s play ball,” Valentina said, kneading an invisible mass between the palms of her hands. “That should be easy enough for her.”

After that, they started to throw a ball at each other.

Or, at least, so they said.

In all honesty, I couldn’t see any balls, let alone any spheres made of light and energy. To me, they were just a bunch of elderly ladies hopping around a dusty living room. They pretended to catch or miss their imaginary bundle, and the only thing I knew for sure was that they were having loads of fun with their absurd match.

“You said you were an engineer?” Valentina asked, kicking the invisible orb with her elbow and―I deduced―redirecting it toward Berenice.

“Uh-huh,” I answered. Soon I would get used to strangers knowing more about my own life than myself.

“Then you must be familiar with Lavoisier’s Law, am I right?” Valentina pretended to throw the ball over her shoulder, and Alice skipped like a goat to grab it with both hands before it―allegedly―touched the ground.

“I am.” I nodded. At last, something I excelled at: trusty, real-world Physics. “Energy can’t be created nor destroyed; only transformed,” I recited proudly.

“Watch out!” Gianna said, swatting at my head as if to help me dodge the ball. She slapped me hard and left me feeling sore and giddy. I eyed her angrily. “Ouch! Was that necessary?” I shouted.

“Sorry, it was about to fly straight into your eye!” She apologized with a shrug and pretended to lift an imaginary object from the floor.

“That’s right, energy can only be transformed.” Valentina seemed pleased with my knowledge of Physics. “You can’t create it out of nothingness. Which means you only have two options when working with magic: you either use your own life force or source it from somewhere else. The first option is easier, but it can drain you... or even kill you. The second is much harder, but if you learn to do it well, it could make you virtually indestructible.”

“Sounds good,” I admitted.

“You could blow up a whole city all by yourself!” Berenice clapped excitedly, like blowing up whole cities was something everyone should aspire to.

“Catch!” Alice squealed and gestured toward me.

I stood on the carpet and scowled at her. “There’s no ball to catch,” I grunted.

“Of course there is,” Valentina reprimanded me, squatting to pick up the ball which wasn’t there. “It’s an energy ball. That’s what I’m trying to teach you, but you are stubborn. And cork-brained.”

I puffed at the insult and the air whistled as it came out of my lungs. “Whatever. I’m sorry. I can’t see anything.”

“Can’t you at least feel it?” Valentina pretended to rub something against my chest, and I stared at her blankly.

“No. Nothing at all.”

I stepped away from her, increasingly frustrated by the witches’ stupid game.

“Valentina, she’s a stray, what did you expect?” That was yet another elderly lady. Was it Agnes? Or Elda? They all looked so similar.
