After talking to Detective O’Leary, Dennis decided to take a seat in the main lobby. He wanted to be at the hospital to keep an eye on the sisters and the people in their lives. He had dodged a bullet with O’Leary and Kathy in the cafeteria. With the size of the space, he didn’t think Kathy had overheard his conversation with the detective.

Still, he didn’t want to linger in case Kathy somehow recognized him, so after his chat with O’Leary was done, he made his way back to the main lobby.

Trisha was gone by the time he got there, which was fine with him. He had her number in case he needed to grill her more, but he thought he had gotten as much out of her as he was going to get.

Just as he sat down in the lobby, he noticed a late-middle-aged couple walk in from the cold. The woman was dressed in a peacoat that covered her down to her knees. She had a scarf wrapped around her neck and black gloves, which she peeled off as soon as she entered the hospital. Her companion wore a black leather jacket, khakis, and sneakers. His fists were buried deep in his pockets and when he got inside, he rubbed them together to warm them.

The two of them had such a nervous energy about them that Dennis couldn’t help but eye them curiously. He listened closely as they approached the receptionist.

“Hi, um, we’re here for our first grandchild.” The woman giggled. “Oh, that sounds so weird to say! I mean, do I look like a grandma?”

To Dennis, she did. But maybe it was the late hour or his faltering eyesight that wasn’t doing her any favors.

“So you’re family?” the receptionist asked.

“Oh yes,” the woman said. “It’s our son’s baby.”

“You’ll probably want to search for his wife, Samantha Harper,” the man cut in.

The receptionist tapped away at her computer and a moment later, she said, “Yes, I’ve got her here. Room 348. Take the elevators just around this corner to the third floor. When you get up there, take a right and you’ll see the nurse’s station. They’ll be able to buzz you in. I’ll let them know you’re coming.”

Interesting, Dennis thought to himself. You have to be buzzed in. I wonder if they’ll allow me to enter when the time’s right.

“Okay, thank you.” The man began to lead his wife toward the elevators.

Dennis watched as they pressed the call button. He considered for a second, and then sprung to his feet. He approached them just as the elevator doors opened and several people stepped out.

The woman smiled at him and then met his eyes, silently asking who was going to proceed onto the empty elevator first.

Dennis put his hand over the doors to hold it open, then motioned for the couple to enter with his other hand. “After you.”

“Oh, thank you,” the woman murmured. “Such a gentleman.”

“What floor are you going to?” the man asked.

“The third floor,” he said.
