CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“Bridges?” I stare at Quill the next morning as we eat breakfast in the mess together. “Where?”

Quill shrugs, still half asleep, holding out his plate for Beth to dump some of the pancakes she brought for him on it. “I heard some of the older Ones talking. Apparently, there are bridges that connect the islands. But not the island you’re on. That one is only accessible by boat.”

I stare down at my plate which is piled with food. “This entire place is like a thousand unsolved riddles.”

Beth giggles. “That’s almost poetic, Taylor.”

Quill yawns, “Yesterday sucked. I couldn’t even see you guys, and I only know a couple of Level Ones. The older students stick to themselves.”

Beth glances at me. “There were no Level Zero students aside from us. Although I still haven’t seen Anderson and Blythe. Weren’t they supposed to be with us in the barracks?”

Quill’s eyes widen. “You don’t know?”

“Know what?” I give him a wary look.

“Anderson had a freak attack at the infirmary, and his sister was called in. One of the Level Ones saw her yesterday, just a glimpse, and said his sister had these bad, scorching marks on her arms, and she seemed pissed. I don’t know about Blythe, but he was with Anderson when he had his freak attack and got hurt. So, he’s in the infirmary, I guess.”

I have to admit that I had been slightly curious why Anderson and his fellow future inmate hadn’t graced our barracks, but it had been more of relief than blatant worry for their safety.

But listening to Quill describing the marks on Anderson’s sister, my mind instantly goes back to the scene from the mess the other day, when the two students had gotten into a brawl. I had convinced myself that I had been seeing things but maybe, just maybe …

My thoughts are interrupted when an arm is slung across my shoulders. “Taylor!”

Beth and Quill gape as Jesse sits down next to me, a tray overflowing with eggs and pancakes slamming next to mine. “What’re we talking about?”

My eyes flicker to his plate. “How come you’re always eating when I see you?”

“I’m a growing boy,” he steals a strip of bacon from my plate and pops it into his mouth.

When he goes for the second strip, I slap his hand, lightly, “Growing boys can turn into little piggies very fast. Better watch that appetite.”

He gives me a delighted look, his eyes dancing in amusement. “I forgot to take some bacon. I’ll swap you a pancake for a strip.”

I reluctantly agree and watch him pick out the fattest pancake from the heap and put it on my plate.

As he does so, I feel the hair on the back of my neck rise. When I look over my shoulder, I see Veronica glowering at me, her eyes filled with vicious hatred.

I smile at her and wiggle my fingers.

“I didn’t know you were good friends with Jesse,” Quill mutters, his tone dark.

Before I can say anything, another tray slams
