FILL YOUR HOUSE WITH GOOD BOOKS
âThe man who doesnât read good books has no advantage over the man who canât read.â

Request the Newbery Medal- and Caldecott Medal-winning books from your schoolâs media specialist or the public librarian. These are childrenâs and young adult titles that have received national awards for excellence in writing and illustration. Elicit advice about reading material that matches your childâs grade level and interest. If your child is interested in specific topics, such as sports, nature, animals, or planes, start with those topics. Buy subscriptions to magazines that are age- and interest-appropriate, such as Highlights and Sports Illustrated for Kids. Get creative.
When I teach reading to college freshmen who did not pass the college entrance exam, I recognize that motivation is essential to success. Knowing that, I use anything that I think will arouse their interest and keep them focused.
Many of my students arrive early and spend their time before class staring at the ceiling or playing with their cell phones. Though I used to be frustrated at the sight of wasting time, it stirred my creative juices. I decided to bring a variety of shopping catalogs to class (Landsâ End, Sears, Brookstone, and Hammacher Schlemmer, to name a few) and directed them to find something they wanted to order. Then I asked them to read the descriptions of their order and explain why they wanted to purchase that particular item. The smiles on their faces and their active participation revealed that this assignment was fun. It worked! I enjoyed the same success with young adults in my ESL (English as a second language) class when I used their favorite song lyrics to teach English.
