Chapter 6

I fought for a handhold in the ice, a crack, a bump, anything to grab so I could free my leg. The water was sooo cold. My teeth clanged together so hard, that I knew if my tongue got between them, it would be a goner. My clothes soaked up water like a sponge.

Then Rusty’s calmness touched me. First it skirted around the edges of my panic, but slowly, gently, it infused me. Even lying on his side on ice in six inches of freezing water with glacial rain splashing around us and the ice about to give way beneath us, he was still taking care of me.

Hold on.

I grabbed enough reason to do as he said, clutching the icicles that were his mane with my wet mittens and holding on as tightly as my near-frozen fingers could manage.

My friend and confidant, my most trusted ally in the whole world, gently positioned his body so I’d be able to stay aboard, and carefully rose to stand.

Out of the water, I panted and wheezed a bit, then gingerly reached down my leg to where it had been pinned and poked it. It wasn’t hurting nearly as badly now with Rusty’s weight off of it. In fact, I could hardly feel it. I wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or not.

“Are you okay, Evy?”

“I... I think so,” I croaked. “But I’m soaked.”

Kestrel knew the gravity of those words as well as I did. I was at serious risk from hypothermia. “We need to get you home fast.”

“Start moving the cows,” I said through chattering teeth. “We’ll get the last ones to follow.” If we could just get moving, at least Rusty would warm up.

Kestrel nodded and Rusty and I turned back to the cows left in the hole, now standing ankle-deep in water and staring at us like we were monsters. And Rusty was pretty monstrous for the next minute. By the time the last cow left the sunken watery pit, we were all soaked. Kestrel still hadn’t moved the herd toward the ranch but as soon as Rusty and I were on safe ice, she called the cows and headed out. For once, the hairy beasts organized themselves in an even line as they followed her. Maybe they were just too tired to act dumb anymore.

Rusty and I settled in behind Bella and pushed her to hurry as my clothes froze on my body. The temperature dropped as the sun slid down the sky and I felt so cold I hurt all over. In an hour or two, it would be below freezing and I didn’t know what I’d do then. At least right now, I was still shivering. You’re only really in trouble if you stop shivering, if you stop feeling the chill.

To be safe, I needed to stop and light a fire but that was impossible. Though I always carried matches with me as a safety thing, they’d be soaked and useless now. And besides, what
