I THOUGHT A cat or dog had run in front of us and I hit the brake so hard that Linda flew off the seat, onto the floor.

“You stopped,” she said as I helped her up.

“God, I’m sorry, Linda,” I said.

She raised one finger in the air and shook it at me. “Stop saying you’re sorry,” she said. “That’s why I told you to stop the car back there. So I could give you a lecture.”

“I’m sorry.”

“You did it again, Ross. Now stop! You don’t have to be sorry all the time.”

“All right.”

“All right,” she said softly, reaching into the glove compartment for her lipstick. “Now for my lecture. We’ve been driving in circles long enough, Ross. It’s time to plot a course.”

“A metaphor for my life,” I said disconsolately.

She leaned back against her door, crossed her arms, and studied my face. “It doesn’t have to be,” she said. “You have just as much right to drive down Main Street as the next guy.”

“I know.”

“Only you don’t believe that, do you?”

“No, I don’t.”

“Why not?”

“I don’t know.”

She put her hand on the dashboard and drummed her fingers for a moment. “Okay, none of my business,” she said.

“No. I’m—” I caught myself before I apologized again.

She smiled at me and shook her head slowly.

“I appreciate it, Linda,” I said.

“I care about you. Johnny and I both care about you. And Sally, you’re her favorite person on earth right now. That’s quite a compliment, you know. Children are an excellent judge of a person’s heart.”

I thanked her for that.

“So. How was your heart broken?” she asked.

When I looked at her, she shrugged her shoulders, as if to say, Whenever you’re ready, it’s easy, just tell me.

“Do you think I can make it from here to Smith College without a major accident?” I said. Then I sat up straight and put one hand on the gearshift.

“That’s the spirit,” Linda said.

“Here we go then,” I said.

“Pull up the anchor!” she exclaimed.

“Blast off!” I said.
