Tommy woke up with his head and his side throbbing. His neck had a crick in it from sleeping half-sitting up, and there was something very warm glued to his side. When he opened his eyes, he could barely see out of one of them.

So the warm attachment was Annie and he knew the aches were from the fight with the stalker last night. He’d bet that bottle of Advil was still up here somewhere. He turned to look at the bedside table next to him and groaned a little as that kicked up the ouches.

“You okay, Officer Tommy,” Annie whispered. “Do you need a drink of water?”

“I would love a glass of water,” he whispered back.

“Okay.” She slipped off him and padded into the bathroom, bringing him a Dixie cup full of water.

“You’re awesome, thank you.” He grabbed another four Advil out of the bottle beside the bed and downed them with the water. Now he just needed them to kick in and take the edge off.

She climbed up next to him. “Did the monster hurt you?” she whispered.

“A little bit, but I won the fight and the police took him away so he can’t hurt you or your brother or your sister or your daddy.”

“Oh. I’m glad you won. He was scary.” So serious.

“I know. I’m sorry you were scared.” Tommy adored her.

“Me too. Can I sit with you again? My eyes are tired.”

“Of course you can. Mine are tired too. We can sleep some more.” He held out his arm and she snuggled right in.

“Glad you’re here. I bet Daddy will make muffins for breakfast.”

“Is that your favorite?” There was no end to Ian’s ability in the kitchen, it seemed. Tommy’s stomach approved. A lot.

“Uh-huh. Blueberry ones.”

“That sounds yummy.” He kissed the top of her head, and when he was done, he found Ian was awake, looking at him and Annie. “Hey.”

“Hey. You need more ice?” Ian’s voice was husky, low.

“I think I’ll be okay once the Advil kicks in.”

“What’s Advil?” Annie whispered.

“It’s a pill that helps make the hurt go away,” Tommy told her.

“I can’t take pills so good.”

“No? Do they make you gag?” His mom had stories about him and his triplets being awful to give meds to.

“Uh-huh. Nasty.” She stuck her tongue out.

He chuckled. “I have a bigger mouth so it’s easier for me.”

Her little giggle made him feel ten feet tall.

The pain didn’t seem quite so bad anymore, either, and whether that was down to Annie or the Advil or a combination of both, he didn’t know, but he was going to take it.

They all fell asleep again, and when he woke up for the second time, it was to the smell of coffee and bacon on the air, and the laughter of children drifting up to him. That was an incredibly nice way to wake up.

He got himself out of bed, feeling skanky in his jeans—no underwear—that he’d slept in all night. Luckily he’d come prepared to stay for the weekend, so he had clean clothes to put on after he took a super quick shower.
