chapter 24

Mischief

Rachel was driving. Mary was sitting next to me in the back seat. Deanne was drinking something from a paper bag. So far, it was just an evening drive in Dallas. I wondered if this was all we were going to do.

Deanne turned and offered me a drink from her bottle. I wasn’t even tempted a little bit, not the least bit curious what she had in there. I didn’t care if it was RC Cola or Crown Royal. “No, thanks.”

Deanne said, “Wimp.”

Mary said to Deanne, “Lose it.”

I was curious about Rachel, though. “Rachel can drive?”

Mary said, “She’s 15. She stayed around a couple of grades.”

“Yeah, just so I could pal around with you three.”

Deanne looked at Mary impatiently. “Well?”

Then all three of them looked at me. We were stopped at a convenience store. “What?”

Mary said, “We’ve got … a club.”

Rachel giggled.

Deanne said, not very nicely, “Yeah, a girl’s club.”

Mary said to me, “You wanna join?”

This whole conversation was so weird. I could tell they all had some kind of secret thing going on, and they weren’t going to let me know about it. Not right away, anyway.

I said, “I don’t know.”

Deanne laughed, and mocked me. “She doesn’t know!”

Mary was the only one being half-way nice to me. “You have to pass initiation.”

Rachel said, “It’s a test of character.”

Deanne said, “Yeah, and if you flunk, we’re gonna drop you off at the nearest cop shop, and…”

I wanted to let them know. “Well, my Dad is…”

But they ignored me. Mary said to Rachel, “What are we going to assign her?”

Rachel said, “Cut power to someone’s house?”

Deanne said, “Pinch some lipstick? I need a new shade.”

Rachel said, “Let’s sneak into a movie.”

I actually thought that would be kind of neat. And I thought I could sneak out if I didn’t like it.

Mary said, “Like, without paying.”

That was when I almost got out of the car. “Look, maybe I don’t want to be in your club after all. This was a bad idea. Can I go home now?”

Deanne threw her arms up. “I told you, Mary. What a baby!”

Rachel got out of the driver’s seat, opened my door, and said, “You got legs.” I almost cried right there. They were just going to leave me here!

Mary said, “No, wait. Winnie, do you know any boys in the eighth grade?”

That question came out of nowhere. I said, “Yes, my brother Jerry.”

Mary said, “Who else?”

I blurted out the name, the one name that I was trying to not say. “Paul Montez.”

Deanne suddenly was all interested. “Ooh, too much. A hunk.”

Mary said, “Does he know you?”

I said, “Are you kidding? No way.”

Rachel clapped her hands. “Perfect. I know where he lives.”

Mary said, “Well, you’re going to have your test at his house.”

I said, “What?” And I meant ‘what’ as in ‘what do I have to do’ and ‘what have I gotten myself into’ and ‘what do these girls want with me.’ But I only said, “What?”

Mary said, “We call it ‘The Snow Job.’ First, we need to get some snow.
