Filtering and commenting

The myriad amount of settings available in Group Policy can be overwhelming, and accordingly Windows Server 2008 now offers the ability to filter through the available switches in Group Policy to find the object you're looking for. In the toolbar, click the Filter button, or right-click on Administrative Templates under Computer Configuration or User Configuration and select Filter Options. You can choose to display any managed setting, settings that have already been configured, or settings that have an administrator-appended comment on them. You can also filter by keyword, like a Google search, or filter by system requirement—if you want to, for example, show settings that apply to systems with Internet Explorer 6.0.

Of course, if you work as a team of administrators lording over an enterprise-wide Group Policy deployment, you might want to comment or otherwise document directly in the system what certain configurations you've set up actually do. Enter the commenting feature, which allows you to document right on a setting what that function is intended to accomplish. Your peers can also search on your comments using the comment as the criteria in their query.

To enter a comment:

Open the Group Policy Management Console.
