Using the Bridge Strategy
A bridge site must be truly about the topic or need that is its starting point. There must be no sense of “bait and switch”—this is not a “decoy trick.” But we can then transition across, with integrity, to:
1. Life StoryPages—of the Webmaster, or other people associated with the site topic. (Church sites might be tempted to call these Testimony Pages, because that is the term we are used to using, but try to avoid church jargon.)
2. Parallel Pages—Almost all secular topics contain embedded within them a spiritual parallel which can be drawn out.
3. “Meaning of Life” questions—Pages which ask leading questions.
4. A Gospel Presentation—The three previous categories of page can gently lead to an explanation of the way of salvation (within the site, or as an off-site link).
As I mentioned earlier, I believe one of the best evangelistic tools out there are the real life testimonies of your membership. At least once a year, most churches have a specific time when they emphasize evangelism and encourage their members to learn how to share their testimony with others. Using the Internet and a church Web site now gives you many opportunities to use those testimonies.
At a conference where I spoke about church Web sites and their opportunities for ministry, Aaron Stone, network administrator for the First Assembly of God Church in North Little Rock, Ark., shared with me an idea he was working to implement at his church:
“I want to be able to have people send us their self-made testimonies recorded via Webcams or personal video cameras so that we can select a few that are gripping, emotional, and compelling enough to make an impact upon the listener. Then we would make these accessible to the public via our Web site, and/or YouTube, Podcasts, etc . . . For instance, we have a ministry called Journey to Total Freedom, which is a women’s ministry for the abused. This would allow other abused women in our church to connect to women in the videos. I feel that it is a MUST to have these women’s videos be self recorded. I feel that they would not be able to totally open up if they had anyone else recording, viewing, or listening while they told their story. This would allow them to speak freely, cry if they needed, have runny mascara, all of the things that show emotion. No cuts, no retakes, no scripts, just real women telling real stories. And I will have everyone do this, abused males, people addicted to porn, drugs, alcohol, and people who have broken marriages. I feel that those videos we use must be of people in our community, and who attend our church regularly. Why? Because if you are struggling with an addiction I feel that it would help to be able to look a few rows over and see this person that has been freed from addiction and be able to relate. This will also be a great tool for our other
