DURING THE LATE 1990s, Unified Modeling Language (UML) became popular as it brought a variety of diagramming practices together. But, like the emergence of Monumental Methodologies in the 1980s, UML became subsumed into the newest Monumental Methodology—namely, the Rational Unified Process (RUP).

In addition to incorporating UML diagrams, RUP included process guides, a life cycle that could be interpreted as iterative, and an online knowledge base. As agile approaches became popular, RUP proponents argued their life cycle was indeed iterative and you could simplify the process for smaller projects. Unfortunately for them, neither of these assumptions proved viable to the agile community. Large IT organizations continued to use the RUP life cycle as a waterfall approach, and it was too easy to keep “stuff” rather than take a chance with simplification. Agile practitioners continued to exclude RUP as an agile, or even iterative, methodology.

In an XP discussion group about vendors promoting their methodologies as tailored to smaller projects, Larry Constantine chimed in:

However, doing XP by way of RUP strikes me as a little like buying an expensive 18-wheel moving van, then throwing away the trailer, chopping down the cab, swapping the diesel for an economical 4-banger, and adding extra seats to have a sprightly little runabout for getting quickly around town with the kids and the groceries. If you must pay the price, perhaps this approach is better than nothing, but it seems that doing XP simply by doing XP would be cheaper and more efficient.
