A Day in the Life

I became a principal not because I wanted to be a principal, but because I wanted to open a space for the kind of school I desperately wanted to be part of, the kind of school I wanted as many families as possible to have access to. Leadership is the role that was placed in front of me as the means to accomplish this goal. So I stepped into it, repeatedly, as it was turning out, and I accepted the combination of adrenaline rush, disturbed sleep, and continuously gnawing worry that went with it.

But I dislike managing people. I’d rather they manage themselves. And I don’t want to be responsible for their problems. And I don’t like devoting huge amounts of my work time complying with directives from above and beyond. But I did the work as best I could and took from it what joy I could. I kept a diary for part of that time and my entries reflect the sheer madness of the job in the midst of our ambitious school’s second year in existence.
