“Are you sure she remembered my lesson?” Anthony paced back and forth inside the pro shop. It didn’t seem like Evette to forget about his class. And her brothers seemed to be deliberately holding back part of their explanation as to where she was. A two-hour lunch break seemed a little far-fetched in his opinion.

“I know she remembered because she mentioned it before she went to lunch,” Craig answered. “It’s only ten after two so they may have gotten stuck in traffic.”

The last sentence caught Anthony’s attention. “They?” This was the first he’d heard of Evette having left with another person.

The phone rang, and Craig answered it hurriedly. As he spoke, he motioned for Anthony to take a seat or browse the shop. Anthony decided on the latter.

Moments later the bell on the door announced an entry. Before he saw her, he heard Evette’s laughter.

A feeling of dread washed over him as he caught a glimpse of her walking in, her arm looped through Justin’s. She seemed a little unsteady on her feet, but if she was hurt she probably wouldn’t be laughing. Feeling awkward, Anthony hung back and remained where he stood.

“I will never ride in a car with this man again,” she told Craig.

“Still has a lead foot, huh?”

“Lead is putting it mildly. Is there a heavier adjective we could use?”

“Let me remind you that you were the one complaining about being late for your lesson. I did my best to get you here on time,” Justin said.

“Next time, let me be late.”

“You are late,” Craig pointed out. “I’m putting you two on record for the longest lunch break in history.”

“Sorry,” Evette said. “We started talking about the old days when we were kids and. . .” Her voice trailed off as she stared at Craig. “You said I was late for my lesson. Did Anthony show up?”

“Ahem.” Anthony stepped out into clear view. “I was here five minutes early even.”

“Oh, no.” Evette covered her face with her hands. “I’m so sorry. Of course I’ll deduct part of the cost. Let me grab my clubs, and I’ll meet you out on the range.” Before he could answer, she disappeared into the back room.

Anthony hefted his bag onto his shoulder. “I guess the lesson starts now.”

Justin stepped forward and held out his hand. “I know we met briefly, but we weren’t properly introduced. I’m Justin Greene.”

“Anthony Edwards. Evette tells me you’re an old family friend.” Anthony felt a degree of satisfaction from using the word friend. That sounded so much better than ex-fiancé. He didn’t like the idea of Evette’s spending time with this guy, no matter how long ago the wedding had been called off.

Anthony couldn’t shake the mental image of how natural the two of them had seemed together moments earlier.

“Anthony Edwards—don’t you write a sports column for the newspaper?”

Anthony nodded. “Yeah, I sure do. It’s been nice meeting you, but if you’ll excuse me, I need to get my lesson in. I’d hate to miss out on more time than I already have.
