“I COULD WORK AS MUCH AND EAT AS MUCH AS A MAN—WHEN I COULD GET IT—AND BEAR THE LASH AS WELL! AND AIN’T I A WOMAN?”

DURING THE CIVIL WAR, SOJOURNER HELPED RECRUIT BLACK TROOPS FOR THE UNION. IN 1864, SHE MET ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

SHE FAMOUSLY RODE HORSE-DRAWN STREETCARS IN WASHINGTON, DC, TO SHOW THAT BLACK PASSENGERS SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO SIT NEXT TO WHITES—AND SUCCEEDED. SHE DIED IN 1883.

Susan and her friends found a new enemy in Horace Greeley, the editor of the New York Tribune . The Tribune was one of the most important newspapers in the country. Greeley had once supported women’s rights. Now he sided with the male-only abolitionists. He filled his newspaper with arguments against the woman’s vote. “The best women I know do not want to vote,” he claimed. He banned all press about Susan. If forced to write about Elizabeth in the society pages, he vowed only to refer to her as Mrs. Henry B. Stanton. In other words, he would describe her by naming the man to whom she was married. He would never mention any of her own accomplishments .

Susan and Elizabeth realized that if women were going to get equal rights, they would have to fight for it themselves.
