Sitting Bull often said he had no quarrel with the wasichu as long as they stayed away. But they were coming closer all the time. In 1872, US soldiers and a group of surveyors appeared in the Sioux hunting grounds near the Yellowstone River in Montana. They spent days measuring land for another train line. To Sitting Bull, it was proof that the government had no intention of following the Treaty of 1868. He and the Oglala war chief Crazy Horse led several attacks against the soldiers, who retreated in 1873. For a while, Sioux hunting grounds were undisturbed.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t true of the Black Hills. The Sioux thought of the Black Hills as the center of their world. It was a sacred place where warriors had visions, and hunters always found game.
