In 839, a fleet of more than one hundred Viking warships raided Armagh, Ireland’s holiest city. A year later, they were back. Rather than return home, some Vikings decided to stay in Ireland. They sailed their longships up rivers to loot other holy cities. In 841, the Vikings established a trading port called Dublin, which today is Ireland’s capital and largest city.
Most of these attacks were quick strikes against the locals. The Viking raiders went into a town or village, took what they wanted, and left. But, just as they had done in Ireland, some of the Vikings began to settle in the places they attacked.
