Chapter 6

Landing the Big Jobs

Ten years after being elected pontifex, Caesar ran for pontifex maximus—the highest priesthood in Rome. He was up against two older and more experienced men.

Already deep in debt from running the games, Caesar borrowed more money to get elected. Crassus was among Caesar’s most generous supporters. He was one of the richest men in Rome.

Caesar was risking everything. If he lost, he’d never gain the power and influence necessary to make the money back. He would have to flee the city, with angry creditors on his tail! As he left home the day of the big vote, Caesar told his mother he’d return either “as pontifex maximus . . . or as a fugitive.”

But of course, the people’s choice was Julius Caesar!

The new position came with a new house. After thirty-seven years in Subura, Caesar moved his family into their beautiful new home right in the center of town.
