Meanwhile, the janitor was called into the headmasterâs study. âIntolerable,â I heard M-skiâs voice say, âthat these brats keep lying! I told you that stiff measures were needed from the start. I know the little villains inside out. And you,â he said to the janitor, âwill have to stay. This will take a little longer.â The janitor muttered something under his breath, and other mumbling came from the depths of the study, including M-skiâs familiar phrase, âWeâll do what we have to do.â Piotr was summoned. A contradiction in our written statements, I thought; that had to be the reason M-ski was so angry. Yes, of course, it was the dress, or the scrap of Elkaâs dress, red, that Szymek had mentioned to satisfy them, saying that we burned it after the last explosion. It wasnât in my statement or in Piotrâs, so now they were going to ask about that dress, that scrap. Who found it, where, and when. Weâd blundered, we should have settled on the details while the janitor was out of the room; then each of us could say the same thing now, and that would be the end of the interrogation, with their believing it happened exactly the way they thought. But the janitor made himself comfortable in his chair and clearly wasnât going to leave us alone again. On the radio WÅadysfÅawa GomuÅkiâs speech was just over, and there were cheers and deafening applause. Next, operetta music, a painfully thin, womanâs voice wailing, âOh, oh, I lo-o-ove you so!â while my leg went numb and the pain in my left foot wouldnât stop twinging. I owed that pain to Weiser, and in a sense still do. Whenever rain clouds gather in the sky, I look at the small scar below my ankle and know Iâll be limping soon. But I mustnât get ahead of myself. Let me return to the abandoned brickworks, because not everything has been explained.
