Clara’s health began to suffer during her speaking tour. She was pushing herself too hard. She kept lecturing until one spring night in 1868 when her voice suddenly gave out. Unable to speak, she was forced to cancel her engagements and go home to Massachusetts to recuperate. There the family doctor made her understand that she would not truly regain her health without a long rest. “You can’t rest in your own country. They won’t let you,” he said, advising her to go to Europe.

Several months later, she did.
