Chief Red Eagle

It might surprise you to learn that the man called Chief Red Eagle was named William Weatherford. Although his mother’s side of the family was Native American, his father was Scottish. William was raised by the Creek Indians in Alabama. They gave the boy the name “Lamochattee,” which means “Red Eagle.”

When the War of 1812 began, Red Eagle and other Indian leaders agreed to help the British. The British promised in exchange that they could keep their land once the Americans were defeated.

Red Eagle led his tribesmen in the bloody Creek War. He was one of the few to escape the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Red Eagle later surrendered in exchange for the safety of his people who had been captured. He helped to work out a peace treaty with the settlers. Jackson admired Lamochattee’s courage and spared his life.
