CAROLINE HERSCHEL (1750–1848) was a German British astronomer who discovered numerous comets, including her namesake, the periodic 35P/Herschel-Rigollet. Throughout her adult life, she worked alongside her brother William (who discovered the planet Uranus), first in music and then in astronomy. With an orbital period of 155 years, Caroline’s comet will next be spotted in 2092 … commit the date to memory!

ELIZABETH BLACKWELL (1821–1910) is recognized as the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States (1849). She was a pioneer in promoting the education of women in medicine. In 1853, Elizabeth opened a small medical dispensary that was eventually expanded into the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children, an in- and outpatient facility and nursing school run exclusively by women. Today, Elizabeth’s infirmary is known as New York-Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan Hospital, one of New York’s largest hospitals.
