She would always remember the way the cold stone floor felt against the soles of her feet, harsh, rough, her senses in tune with every step she took. She had made the decision not to put her shoes on, she was enough of a country girl to do this barefoot, her version of travelling light.

She would always remember how many steps it had been to the end of the hall, forty-seven, and how she had stayed as close to the wall as she could as if it would somehow hide her. The door to her cell had been left unlocked, compliments of Ernesto Herrara. He would be on guard, on duty, for the next two hours so, if they could only move quickly enough…but so far there were no signs that anyone had come to rescue her.

She turned down a corridor that dead-ended. Cut into the wall was a small window, just at chin level, with four metal bars sealing her in. She took the diamond cross from her pocket, undid the clasp and fastened it to one of the bars. She could see the moon in the sky and stars, but still saw no sign of her rescuers. She had never felt more alone in her entire life. She sat down on the cold stone floor to wait.
