CHAPTER 18

Fall was edging closer; fall, and school. “Don’t think of it,” said Zee Zee. They tried not to.

At the end of July there was a very warm spell, following a week of fog in which Mel and Zee Zee went every morning to see Will and Ankar and the mares and colts. They never took poor Jeffy, who had to be shut in the house. “He would be a dead giveaway,” said Will, “if he ever came here alone and asked to be let in.” He was right, of course, but it was growing harder to find excuses to lock Jeffy in at home.

“We must think of something,” said Zee Zee.

“But what?” said Mel.

“Let’s ask Will,” said Zee Zee.

“All right,” said Mel, yawning. It was a long day for Mel, hurrying to the cave at dawn, then home for breakfast and back to the stables. She was learning to halter-break Will’s colts and teach them to lead, and Zee Zee was learning to ride a little, though the fat mares, concerned with their colts and led by Will, were not much of a challenge.

Finally, Will let Zee Zee ride alone, riding by her side. He was teaching her to use the hackamore. “It’s different from a bridle,” said Zee Zee, having watched Mel.

“Yes,” said Will, showing her how the little block under the chin worked in place of a bit, and why there should be a tiny jerk instead of a gentle pull to tell the horse what you wanted. “Like this,” he would say, and Zee Zee would feel the mare respond easily. His brown hand over hers was very warm. The colt galloped at their side, bucking and kicking, and sometimes wanting lunch, so that they finally had to stop and let him drink.

“Will you sell all the colts?” asked Zee Zee.

“I think so,” said Will sadly. “But maybe not all,” he said, looking at the stud colt. “Maybe not all.”
