WHEN ELLE SLOWLY SAT up in her coffin, the room was still and silent. She recognized it as the living room where she had argued with Victoria mere hours before. It was still night, but now the room was lit by candles. Rose petals had been scattered over the coffin and on the floor near it, as if awaiting Elle’s little feet.

But Elle merely sat in the coffin a moment, absently pulling the veil from her face, trying to get her bearings. The world was different now. Colors were more vibrant, smells more intense. She could smell the candlewax burning as if it were near her face, and the scent of Victoria’s cologne . . . the flowery scent of Victoria’s skin.

Elle slowly turned her head and saw Victoria sitting in a chair, facing the coffin, waiting. She was wearing a black suit with a blue ascot rising from the open collar of a white shirt. Her long blonde hair had been pushed back in an elegant bun, and her golden rings winked in the candlelight. She was reclining at her ease, one ankle resting on her knee, as she read a book – the same book Elle had been reading hours before, her copy of Frankenstein.

Victoria wasn’t alone in the room. Elle could smell blood . . . and fear. She followed the sound of soft whimpering and her heart thrilled at the sight before her: a pretty young woman, weeping and helpless, was bound to a chair not ten feet from Elle’s coffin. She had been gagged, and her wrists were covered in bloody bandages, as if she had been drained already. She was yet another Alice lookalike, with great breasts and a tiny waist, long blonde hair and innocent blue eyes. The smell of her blood drove Elle to distraction and a noise came out of her that startled her – a noise like the low growl of a wolf.

Hearing Elle’s growl, Victoria looked up and smiled. “Ah,” she said, setting aside the book, “you are awake, my love, my heart.” She approached the coffin and held out her arms.

Elle smiled at this display of affection. She braced her hands on Victoria’s shoulders and allowed the taller woman to lift her down from the coffin by the waist. The moment her bare feet had touched the carpet, Elle moved past Victoria, her eyes fixed on the weeping girl bound to the chair, who wept harder when she saw Elle staring at her.

Elle looked past the terrified girl and halted when she saw her reflection in the mirror on the wall: she was gorgeous! Her black hair, once thin and balding, was now full and lustrous. The color and life had also returned to her gaunt face and body, so that her shape was now full and curvy once more. Her once-shriveling breasts were full, swelling like baking bread from the low collar of the white dress she had risen in, and her eyes – her eyes were the glowing cat-eyes of a vampire, the pupils viciously narrowed.
