She answered the phone on the second ring. “Hello?”

“Is this Mrs. Mason O’Conner?”

The woman hesitated briefly before responding. “Yes, it is. Can I help you?”

“Mrs. O’Conner, this is Amy, from Memorial General. You wanted us to call if there was any change in Mr. O’Conner.”

“Is he awake then?”

“He woke up a few minutes ago.”

“I’ll be right there.” Slamming the phone down, she grabbed her keys off the hook by the door and ran from the house, her mind racing frantically. Had he spoken? Does he remember what happened? Does he have brain damage? Her heart raced in trepidation as she sped toward the hospital. Her eyes kept flicking to the rear-view mirror, and she lifted her foot from the gas pedal as she noticed a white car speeding up behind her. Her arms began shaking in relief when the cruiser flew around her before switching on its flashers. Releasing a pent-up sigh, she pressed her foot back on the gas pedal and brought her speed back up to seventy miles per hour.

Ten minutes later she pulled into the hospital parking lot and found a spot in the back lot, away from the street.

Stepping into the lobby, she pulled the brim of her hat down and hunched her shoulders as she made her way to the stairs and up to the fifth floor.

Poking her head out the door, she looked down the hallway and smiled when she saw that the nurses’ desk was empty. Keeping her steps silent, she ran on tiptoe to Mason’s door, and looked in the small window before stepping into the room and quickly pushing the door closed.

Mason rolled his head toward the door and tried to lift his eyelids. “Who… who’s there?”

Her body shook with rage and she bit down on the corner of her lip until she tasted blood. Walking over to the bed, she looked down at him and curled her hands into fists at her sides. Gritting her teeth, she leaned forward and whispered in his ear. “I’m so glad you didn’t die.”

Mason flinched away from her hot breath and moaned in panic. His hand ran over the edge of the bed, searching for the call button.

Catching his wrist in an iron grip, she pressed down on his hand and grabbed a fistful of his hair with her free hand. “Shut… Up. You listen to me and listen well. If you so much as speak my name to the cops, your wife and unborn child will pay the price. I’ll do to them what I did to you. Are we clear?”

“You wouldn’t hurt her, she’s…”

She tightened her hand in his hair and gave a firm shake. “I said are we clear!?”

Mason nodded and winced when she yanked his hair once more before releasing him. He held his breath and followed the sounds of her shoes squeaking on the floor. When he heard the door opening, he was afraid to get his hopes up that she had actually left.

Mason didn’t know how long he lay there before the door opened again but, he kept still and waited for her to speak.
