“So what’s the play?” Aurora asked as she and Wrenn stood by the port airlock, waiting for the all clear that the Whisper was connected with the orbital station above Visigath.

Wrenn was having a hard time hearing her, focusing instead on her choice of attire. The blonde was decked out in high-calved leather boots with matching skin-tight pants. She wore a deep-cut blouse, covered by a rugged jacket that didn’t go down below her midriff. She looked both prepared for a rough environment and a night out at the honkey tonk, whichever came first. Wrenn noticed she raised an eyebrow at him when his eyes finally made it up to her face and he stammered. “Uh . . . yeah, I figured we’re tourists, come to see the sights and what not.”

“On Visigath? It’s a barren wasteland, some water world that shifted too close to its sun and dried out. What sightseers are you thinking would come out to this elbow of the ‘verse?” Aurora placed her hands on her hips.

“Well, what do you suggest Ms. All-Knowing Grifter?” Wrenn spat back.

“Why don’t we play like we’re a couple again, like we did at the casino? Say your cousin told us about work out this way. That’ll get us down to the surface at least.”

“Alright.” Wrenn agreed. “You’re awfully quick to make us out to be involved, you know that?”

“Because it bewilders the marks, darling. They’re so busy trying to figure out how a slob like you bagged a catch like me, that they don’t realize they’re being had.” Aurora winked.

“Oh, now that’s just unkind.” Wrenn chuckled.

The ship clicked into place, a slight shudder reverberating throughout the hull as the docking clamps moved into place. Cheyenne crackled into each of their ears as the airlock whirred to life, filling the sally port with atmosphere from the station. Statement: I’ve cracked into the orbital station’s network. It is similar to that of Deadrock, though it appears to have most of its connections turned off.

“What do you mean?” Wrenn asked.

Clarification: The station has a Qnet array, but it appears to be powered down. All outside communication is limited as a result. There is a satellite connection with the planet, as well as what appears to be a grav elevator, both of which are operational. Source codes appear to indicate that all commands for the system are controlled from the surface.

“This mayor has shut down all outside influence.” Wrenn surmised.

“Explains why our employer hasn’t heard anything for awhile.” Aurora agreed.

“He’s a client, not our employer.” Wrenn corrected. “No one owns us out here.”

Aurora was at first confused, but nodded back, coming to Wrenn’s understanding. “Very well. Should we try to find the client’s informant then?”

“If his cover hasn’t been blown. At least we know the whole station hasn’t been spaced.” Wrenn checked his iron and then placed it back into its holster, an old bit of muscle memory he always did just before stepping into an unknown area.

The two walked down the gangplank and into the station’s opened galley.
