A neighbor of mine once had a rustic willow armchair adorning her front porch. When I asked where she bought it, she didn’t bother fibbing. She said simply, “I’m not gonna tell you because then you’ll go get one like it, and mine will no longer be unique.” I listened as she lamented over an earlier incident with copycats. She had painted her house, and soon afterward, two neighbors within visual vicinity painted their houses in a similar color.

In the months that followed, I started to notice the phenomenon that my neighbor had described. It occurred so often that I called this corollary the Rule of Three, which states,

If one resident does it,

two neighbors will also do it.
