When they found me unconscious next to a pile of apples on the ground, they air-lifted me to Shimla, the closest hospital. They wheeled me in and out of X-ray rooms, the smell of bleach pervading the air. As I repeated my story about the Black Forest, the doctors took me to the psychiatric ward, but all the tests result were normal. They didn’t believe me, but they let me go. As I walked out of the red and white building, I was met with a gust of wind and a flurry of people.

‘A storm is brewing,’ an orange seller shouted at me from across the road. ‘Go to a safe place!’ Then, he hurriedly brought down the pile of oranges and started packing them up.

A storm is the first symbol of evil; the first portent of disaster lighting up the skies. Since prehistoric times, men have shuddered and hidden in their caves when demons came in a storm, with the first drop of rain.

The rain fell down in buckets and lightning lit up the sky. Every time the wind blew, bringing with it drops of rain, I could feel a presence at my neck – the same presence I had felt in the forest. I rubbed my neck vigorously as I walked home. We lived next to the church in the heart of town. The rain kept falling as I walked on a muddy path, next to a river. Whatever followed me, still breathed down my neck. Next to me, a woman fell deep into the river, her cycle somersaulting in the air before she fell. People screamed and ran, but no place was safe. The devil was here to claim souls.

When I reached home and opened the mahogany panelled doors, my neck felt stiff. Whatever was following me, pressed down even further and made harsh, wheezing sounds. I stepped inside my house, and finally, the presence materialized into a person.
