Chapter 17:

Beside the Fire, Dying

After leaving Argentina, the group took their time driving around and gathering supplies. Now, four days later, after passing through New York, John and the group were now in Vermont. They hadn't decided what they were doing for sure, but John had his mind somewhat set on New Colombia, and maybe Cascadia if he could find it.

After bathing in a shallow crystal-clear river, surrounded by the sounds of birds chirping and the wind blowing through the trees, John dried off, got dressed, and headed back to the truck. “Alright Kess, take the girls,” he said, buttoning up his brown checkered shirt.

“Was it as good as the showers back home?” she joked, handing him Carl.

“Better!” he said sarcastically, carrying Carl to the truck as Kesler and the girls headed down to the river.

Rachel grabbed her clothes out of the back and went with Kesler and Trinity. “I hope you didn’t use all the hot water.”

“Oh come on, your jokes are startin’ to get as bad as mine,” he chuckled, getting in and starting the truck.

“I'm not gonna lie little man, kinda wish the kids weren't with us, you included,” he smiled, letting Carl play with his finger. “Daddy woulda joined mommy down by the water...Coulda had fun. I think I kinda like campin’, I was never big on it back in the day. Me and my friend Janey used to from time to time but I only liked it ‘cause it was me and her alone in the woods,” he laughed. “Don’t tell your mother about her okay?” he asked, staring at the big smile on Carl’s face.

Pulling his finger away, John grabbed a cassette tape out of the bin and put it in. “Let’s see if you got your daddy’s taste in music,” he said as the song I Get Around by The Beach Boys started playing. John laughed. “I got a story for this one.”
