CONFUSION ABOUT CHOLESTEROL IN FOOD

Food ads about cholesterol can often be misleading. Cholesterol is found only in animal products. Some products are marketed as “no cholesterol” as a special lure, despite the fact that they never contain an animal product and, therefore, would not be expected to have cholesterol in the first place. So a claim for a special “no-cholesterol peanut butter” is nonsense, because peanut butter—not being an animal product—never contains cholesterol.

Also, don’t assume that a product labeled “no cholesterol and fat-free” is necessarily heart-healthy. Many such foods are loaded with sugar, trading off one health problem for another. Read labels carefully and completely.
