Chapter 3

It was a little over a month later when the situation finally developed further. Heather had fucked James again twice in that time - once with me present, and once alone with him while I was at work, but with my blessing. Heather really enjoyed telling all about it when I got home that night, and to be honest I enjoyed it just as much, both the anticipation of what was happening back home while I was trying to work, knowing that they were fucking, and then the revelation of all the dirty details that Heather whispered in my ear as we had crazy, animalistic sex that night.

Things seemed good and stable if different but it wasn’t to remain like that for long. I drove home one night after an ordinary day at work and as I passed Steven and Mel’s house I saw the ambulance. I slowed down, naturally curious as to what was going on and then I saw Ray on a stretcher being put into the back by the paramedics.

Even though I couldn’t stand the guy after what he’d done, I didn’t wish him any harm, so I pulled the car over to find out what I could and see if there was anything I could do to help. As I got out, I noticed Mel in the front doorway, talking to a policeman. She saw me too, and when I took a step towards her, she shook her head and put her finger and thumb to her ear and mouth in an ‘I’ll call you,’ gesture.

I mouthed the word ‘Okay’ at her, and went home, but my mind was spinning. What had happened? I told Heather and we both ended up speculating for an hour until the phone finally rang.

“Hey,” it was Mel.

“What’s going on?” I asked, “Are you okay?”

Heather was looking at me, and when I told her it was Mel she narrowed her eyes but didn’t say anything. Obviously, there was still ill will between her and the woman I had cheated with, but with the developments since Heather couldn’t cause too much of an argument. She didn’t take her eyes off me though as we spoke.

“Everything’s a terrible mess,” Mel sobbed down the line to me.

“Slow down,” I said, wanting to help, but not wanting to sound too sympathetic for my wife’s benefit. “Tell me everything.”

“Me and Ray,” Mel started, “We’ve well... you know...”

“What?” I said, genuinely surprised. “You’ve been seeing him?”

“Things have been difficult,” she tried to explain, “I thought Ray would just be happy with the odd blowjob to keep quiet but he wanted more, and to be honest, I missed you and Ray sort of stepped in and filled the void...” She trailed off, “I’m sorry. I don’t quite know how to explain it. It just happened.”

“It’s all right,” I reassured her, still surprised at this new development. “You don’t have to apologize to me, do you?” Things were starting to come together now. I guessed what had happened just as she started to explain.
