Dear Mother,

There is no other way to share this news, and so I will simply say it. At the end of August, I suffered an acute polio attack and was placed in an isolation unit for two weeks. It was an awful time there and I was very scared at the time, but now I am recovering at a wonderful rehabilitation center. If you can believe it, Minnesota is one of the best states in America for me to receive treatment in what is called the Sister Kenny method. I am lucky to be here. Has news of Sister Kenny reached Germany? She is nearly a celebrity in America and cares deeply about polio survivors. My treatment is slow, but I am getting stronger every day and hope to go home soon. Give my love to Father and Aunt Kaethe.

With love,

Ursula

Ursula set down the fountain pen and sighed. She left out so much, but the more she included about the reality of her situation, the more she feared her mother would worry. How was she meant to tell her she may never walk again? That standing had been accomplished, but walking still felt like a dream? And how would she tell her she may never have children? That, because of polio, she may never make it back to Berlin to visit? Ursula folded the letter, placed it in the envelope and sealed it shut. If only she could seal shut her fears as easily.
