Chapter 12

Hunter

He’d fallen asleep with a smile but had woken up grumpy.

“I told you that you should have moved to the bed last night.” Normally, I tried not to say that, but he deserved it.

I’d let him sleep for an hour and then had woken him up to eat, but he’d been too tired to get off the couch. After half a plate of dinner, he’d slumped over and told me he’d move in a few minutes. No amount of cajoling had gotten him to move.

“You fucked my brain right out of me. You should have made sure I went to bed.” He sighed as he slumped over his coffee, shifting slightly on the hard seat of the kitchen chair. “All your fault.”

I was a little bit worried about how sore he was, but if he could bitch like that I knew he was fine. A truly uncomfortable Zac was quiet and moody, not dramatic and insane. “Drink your coffee. I’ll make you eggs if you stop whining.”

He quieted and peeked up at me through his lashes. “With fried potatoes…and bacon?”

“Greedy.” But I smiled. “Maybe.”

That had him relaxing back into his chair and grinning as he brought his coffee to his lips. “Okay, but crispy bacon, not the wiggly kind.”

Oh yes, someone was tired but well-loved and excited too.

“You’re getting vegetables for lunch to make up for all that grease.” A lot of veggies.

His face scrunched up, but I could see the smile in his eyes. “What kind of vegetables?”

“Any kind I want.” Especially since I was cooking.

Cooking for little Zac.

He sighed dramatically. “Okay.”

Like he had any choice. “Drink your coffee.”

Zac took another sip and gave me a wink. “Yes, sir.”

Cheeky bugger. Leaning over him, I gave him a kiss and smiled. “Did the book come out?”

He’d chattered all this week about release schedules and teasing authors. Watching him perk up and glance at his phone, I knew the answer before he grinned. “Yes! I’ve been waiting forever.”

He started going on about the series and how much he loved the characters as I began making breakfast. I’d been up long before he’d rolled off the couch and had already had my coffee and paid some bills. By the time I was halfway through cooking, he’d worked himself into such an excited state that he’d pulled out his phone already.

Of course, he’d said it was just to read the first couple of pages, but neither of us believed that nonsense. I knew I’d lost him to the fantasy universe as soon as he’d pulled up the reading app. Some weekends I got frustrated, not that I told him that, but as I watched him getting sucked into the imaginary world, it was different.

He would be mine to take care of the rest of the weekend…and not just making sure he ate and moved once in a while.

“Okay, put that away for now.” He gave me a sly look as he set his phone on the chair beside him, but I shook my head and held out my hand.
