Jousting With Nuns

A ten-year-old demon. The Catholic nuns must have thought I was one when I argued with them about the proper behavior of young girls. My parents were members of Saint Montfort Catholic Church in Blantyre City, and each year, the nuns organized a weekend female grooming event where they taught girls how to behave. Most girls who attended the event were from lower or middle-class families. I forget how much it cost in Malawian Kwachas, but my father said it amounted to something less than one American dollar. The nuns taught things that would help us understand what girls communicate when interacting with others and we would learn how to distinguish ourselves from boys. They covered body language, speech, fashion, menstruation, romantic relationships, and lots about sex. The verbal jousting began when we were informed about God’s opinion on female etiquette, and the battle grew worse by the time we covered how body language led to incest.
