Understand the highs and lows of your emotions, along with how you handle situations. Without proper coping skills, your body may pump you full of too much cortisol and adrenalineâchemicals that can wreak havoc with your equilibrium. Emotions pack a strong punch, and you can count on their working overtime when youâre a mother.
These de-stressing coping skills can greatly help you smooth out your emotional responses:
â Breathe, meditate, and take a time-out. If you stop, count to 10 or 20 (or whatever it takes for you), and breathe in and out deeply and slowly, youâll actually feel your body calm down. Itâs a factâIâve personally used this technique as an intervention on numerous occasions.
â Read up on parenting and be prepared. Prevent your emotions from running away with your calm, logical self by preparing yourself in advance. There will be difficult times, but remember that what you do know is less intimidating than what you donât know.
â Know yourself. Self-knowledge is key to understanding what emotional land mines you should avoid. Strategize and set up personal boundaries to protect yourself from wandering into them.
â Exercise regularly. Oh, I know that you think you donât have time. But if you donât exercise your body regularly, your health will be jeopardized. Clearly, if youâre using all the bulbs in your chandelier, youâll want to take precautions so that doesnât happen. At the very least, take a brisk walk: you need 10,000 steps per day to keep your body functioning at optimal levels.
â Good nutrition is vital, so eat a balanced diet. (Duh.) This includes consuming vegetables, whole grains, fruit, and protein. Forget about processed foodsâeat the real meal.
Your children need you to be vital and mentally and physically healthy, and you need yourself to be that way as well. So if youâre struggling with health issuesâand that includes both physical- and mental-health issuesâdonât put them on the back burner. Treat yourself as if youâre as important and worthwhile as everyone else in your family, and reach out for help.
A Role for Life
When does a motherâs job end? Never. Once a mother, always a mother. (Of course itâs the same with fathers.) So what happens when your kids grow up, move away, and plunk you into the famous empty-nest stage? How will this transition affect you? Well, for one thing, youâll have a lot more time on your hands. Having said that, your mind will probably still spend plenty of time dwelling on, and worrying about, your adult children, so itâs wise to be prepared for this transition before it happens. You donât want to be like some women, who feel utterly lost and sad when their kids grow up and move away from home. When their offspring leave the family nest to begin lives of their own, these ladies have a tough time picking up the scattered pieces of their own identities. Theyâve put their needs aside for so long that they forget what their needs truly are.
