Chapter 20

Now or Never

The ferry drops us off at a landing right next to the Brooklyn Bridge.

“You promised lunch,” Sebastian says as soon as we step off.

I pull out my phone and look at what’s around. We need something quick, because I can only imagine Eden is trying to recalculate and reroute to optimize their course.

“There’s a Shake Shack,” I offer. “Do you like burgers?”

“Of course I like burgers.”

“And then, once we’re full and sluggish, we walk across the Brooklyn Bridge,” I say. “Is it weird that I am super excited to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge?”

Sebastian chuckles. “I think I’d be concerned if you weren’t.”

“It seems like such a rite of passage, you know? I mean it’s the Brooklyn Bridge.”

“Maybe say ‘Brooklyn Bridge’ one more time.”

“Brooklyn Bridge.” I grin and we walk over to Shake Shack, which is only a few minutes away, and takes up the first floor of an older brick building. It’s really busy, which makes sense, since it’s just past noon.

I get a few texts while we’re waiting in line.

ANNIE:

how are things going?

ANNIE:

i’m choosing to believe radio silence is a good thing and you’re not having anymore chaotic breakdown moments

ANNIE:

in school suspension is literally the biggest joke

ANNIE:

mrs. v doesn’t care what we do, she puts on movies and just like goes on walks and shit. honestly, i could have put a cardboard cutout of me and snuck on the new york trip

ANNIE:

anyway, hopefully you’re having a reasonable amount of fun without me!!

I am both amused and disappointed. I’d almost forgotten, while actually getting along with Sebastian, that this was supposed to be a best friend trip. Right now, in this Shake Shack line, I should be listening to Annie go on about the limited vegan options. She should be wearing her Benji shirt beside me. We would have shared AirPods and listened to “The Best Part” on the ferry. We’d be posting selfies on Instagram, and maybe we’d have made a TikTok to one of Benji’s New York songs. Maybe we’d have gotten his attention, even.

I feel a little guilty for having these thoughts, which I find strange. Sebastian wouldn’t mind, but I start to question if I’d change things. He’s still a mystery, and I want to keep getting to know him.

“Something wrong?”

Sebastian isn’t looking at my phone, but at me. It’s a small thing to notice, but I like the way he doesn’t try to look at my texts, like so many other kids would.

“No, just Annie texting from in-school suspension.”

“How’s she doing?”

I laugh. “She says it’s a joke.”

“I had it once,” Sebastian says. When he sees my reaction, he shakes his head. “Nothing exciting. I just skipped too many AP Government classes. And, not to brag, but I had an A. So obviously it wasn’t detrimental if I didn’t listen to O’Grady talk at us on half speed.”

“You took AP Government?”

“Sure.” He shifts his focus to the menu on the wall. “It wasn’t bad.”

“It sounds horrifying.”

I respond to Annie while we wait, letting her know things are going well and we’ll still FaceTime tonight.
