A Day in the Life

The press secretary must be up early reading everything possible in print and online. He or she is also given information from other members of the president’s staff, and sometimes directly from the president. The goal is to craft a “message” for the day related to current events, anticipate the questions he or she will probably be asked, and be ready to reply as if the president were there.

Meetings with the press happen almost every day. There are two types of meetings the press secretary has with journalists.

Gaggle: small meetings that occur off camera, although the press secretary’s comments are still on the record. These conferences include a select group of press corps members that varies day to day.

White House Press Briefing: more formal press conferences that take place in the West Wing of the White House and usually last about thirty to forty-five minutes. The White House press briefing is shown live on television and includes the full press corps.
