RETRIEVING FROM EPISODIC MEMORY

The episodic memory system is more easily activated than the semantic memory system. However, you can help students activate semantic information by combining it with episodic strategies. Here are some ways to help students activate the episodic memory system.

1. Put information up so that it is visually accessible to the learners who need visuals to learn well. Visuals are critical for ELL (English language learner) students’ learning because they have limited semantic (language) acquisition strategies.

2. Color-code units or use symbols, especially if there is a great deal of vocabulary involved.

3. Use graphic (nonlinguistic) organizers to help students “see” the learning, and teach students to develop graphic organizers of their own for learning.

4. Change the room arrangement prior to a new unit. (This technique affects context—“Remember we talked about that information when you were all seated facing the windows.”)

5. Use symbols and/or costumes to help students separate the learning. I use picture frames (frames of reference) when studying pollution. One group of students has a frame that says “politician,” another group has a frame that says “new parent,” another group has a frame that says “factory owner,” and so on. Each group must talk about pollution according to the “frame of reference” they have been given. The frame serves as a context for the learning.

It is important to note here that Eric Jensen cites recent research in his workshops that provides evidence to support the fact that when we test students in the same room in which they learned the information, they do better on the test. In light of what we know about the episodic memory system, this makes sense.
