Summary

The primary curriculum can usefully be thought of as the important knowledge and skills – brought together as a form of story – that we want our children to learn. The curriculum they experience in primary school should connect to and form the foundation of the secondary school curriculum (which we’ll look at in the next chapter).

Question 2: Do primary school children learn differently from older children?

Primary-age children are in an earlier developmental stage than secondary-age children, and this presents a host of challenges for primary school teachers. Primary-age children are:

•more varied in development and ability than secondary-age children. This is due to the greater relative variation in their ages and the fact that variances in social background will have more profound impact at that age.

•lacking the self-sufficiency of older children. Some children come to primary skill unable to use a toilet or hold their bladders. They will need help tying shoelaces, reading clocks and organising themselves.

•still learning basic social skills. Children are still learning how to speak to adults, regulate their own behaviour in public or engage with social conventions like politeness.

•less able to cope with adult experiences such as pressure and boredom. Young children are less able to maintain attention for an extended period and are more prone to distraction from boredom.
