Ashlyn sat at a table by the windows in the Hideaway’s diner, sipping coffee while she waited for Noah. When he finally pulled up, he was ten minutes late. He jumped out of his truck, looking frazzled as he hurried into the diner. He spotted her at her table and rushed over.

“I’m sorry, Ash,” he said quickly. “I forgot to set an alarm for today.”

“Do you usually sleep in on weekends? We could’ve gone later in the day.”

“No—I always set alarms for appointments, meetings, dates… er… that sort of thing. If it’s out of my usual routine, I won’t remember it without an alarm.”

“Oh. Well.” She was still hung up on date. “You remembered anyway.”

Noah’s brow was furrowed, his whole body uneasy with guilt.

“Don’t worry about it. I was enjoying my coffee.” She put a few dollars on the table and got up. “Ready to go?”

She really had been enjoying her coffee and watching the sedate traffic along Main Street. Noah’s lateness really didn’t bother her. Her childhood had been so heavily regimented. Her life on her own continued to be highly controlled because in the early days, a mistake would’ve meant she had to go crawling back to her grandma for help. Eventually, living that way just became a habit rather than a necessity. It was kind of a relief to just go with the flow and not care about timing.

She realized she was actually slightly dreading returning to her life in Chicago because she was enjoying the pace of life in Lenora—helping a few local businesses on her own schedule and doing whatever she wanted with her free time.

“Really, I’m sorry, Ash. It’s not because I don’t give a shit. It’s—”

She laid a hand on his arm. “Seriously, it’s not a big deal. Let’s go.”

He clenched his jaw, nodded, and pulled the door open for her.
