The Gilbert Scott Building, Glasgow, Scotland, 1870–1891

They wanted to build something very big and tall that could be seen by everyone. The tower was designed to tell everyone who lived in the city about what the university was for. It said:

We believe in education and we think it is very important to understand the past, learn new things and find out about science. We don’t just think this is good for us, we think this is good for everyone.

It was a hugely important message and so it made sense to have a huge building to beam it out to the world.
