Chapter Forty-Six

After getting April and Peter cleaned up and changed, Dean and I take it in turns to wash and take off out dirty clothes. I have hand washed Dean’s t-shirt to the best of my ability and left it to dry in the airing cupboard, and with my skirt and my top being pretty much ruined by that filthy, germ-filled water, Dean has kindly offered me his zip-up hoodie to wear so I’m currently making that do as a dress, while poor Dean is shirtless.

I tuck April in as Dean lifts Peter into his bed. Peter has a puzzled look on his face, so Dean asks him what’s the matter.

‘Why do you have boobies?’ Peter asks him.

‘They’re not boobies,’ Dean tells him proudly. ‘They’re pecks.’

This reply does not satisfy Peter, who starts giggling again.

‘Dean has boobies, Dean has boobies,’ he sings. ‘Men don’t have boobies but you have boobies.’

‘His dad has boobies,’ Dean whispers to me. ‘I preferred him when he was silent but violet with a spoon.’

‘Dean has boobies, Dean has boobies,’ Peter continues to sing and April soon joins in.

‘If he wasn’t a kid I’d have punched him by now,’ Dean jokes as we walk downstairs.

‘Dean, you can’t fight a six-year-old.’

‘Why not?’ he laughs. ‘I’d win.’

Dean had the foresight to order a pizza, so we’re not back downstairs for very long before it arrives which is great because I am starving. Dean has also brought a funny movie for us to watch, so he pops it in the machine while I grab the plates.

I sit next to Dean on the sofa and watch him as he eats his pizza and laughs at the TV. He has the most gorgeous smile I have ever seen and I don’t think there’s anything more attractive than when he laughs. Actually, there is, it’s the sight of him sitting here shirtless, and because I’m sitting right next to him and we’re in a well lit room, I can see that even his muscles have muscles.

Dean looks at me and catches me staring, but he’s too polite to say anything.

‘Do you know why junk food tastes so good?’ he asks as he takes a big bite of his pizza. ‘Because it’s bad for you.’

‘Oh, har-har,’ I reply. That’s another Savage Garden reference – I’m never going to live it down.

‘You OK?’ he asks seriously.

‘I guess.’

‘Are you missing my dad?’

‘Sort of. I do really like him, but I think the age gap is a problem for both of us. My last boyfriend was older than me, but by ten years not twenty-two. And when we found him with that woman…’

Dean pulls me close for a cuddle, which is well timed because I could feel my emotions getting the better of me. Whether things were going to work with Mike or not, the thought of him cheating on me really hurts.

‘We don’t have to talk about it,’ he tells me as he strokes my hair.

As we watch the film I can’t help but feel
