The most important part of the waterfront was the wharves—that's where the port city met the sea. The busiest wharf was Taber's Wharf, where the whale ships of Taber & Son were loaded, unloaded, outfitted, and repaired. Walking there in the summer of 1845, Jeremiah Taber listened with satisfaction to the hollow knock of caulkers' mallets, the sawing of ship carpenters, the shouts of stevedores rolling casks of oil, and the calling of riggers working high among the masts and spars of his newest vessel, the Annie Taber.
