Chapter Twenty

Moriganne's muffled scream brought sweat to her forehead. She closed her eyes against the sight of the blade deep in her flesh. They were going to cut out the tattoo like a prize. She slammed her head back against the metal rest and struggled against the bonds, but they held her fast. Again she slammed. Maybe if she knocked herself out she wouldn't have to endure the horror.

The men grew alarmed, pausing their gruesome work as the bridge turned to embers, the fell magics within awakened by their cutting. The urge to call the mija upon them grew by the second. The demonic beast would slaughter them, possibly freeing her, but more likely she would meet a quick end.

The scalpel stuck out of her forearm, the blade halfway into her flesh. They pointed and discussed retrieving Gabrielle for consultation, but hesitated for an unknown reason. Blood dripped into a pan beneath her elbow, a crimson pool growing larger by the second.

On the third slam, the wrap holding the gag slipped. Using the corner of the metal rest, she hooked the cloth, yanking it away from her mouth. Moriganne spat the gag out. The first one to notice reached towards her.

"Hey—"

Pain-riddled adrenaline fueled the shout. She felt the magic draw from the bridge as well as her own faez. A bright line slashed across the guard, spinning him against the stainless steel table where they'd left the tube of venota stones, knocking it onto the floor. The colored balls slipped loose, rolling around beneath the chair and the unconscious guard.

One of the men reached for his pistol while the other reached towards the gag to shove it in her mouth. Before the crumpled rag could be retrieved, Moriganne spoke to the guard with the pistol. The charm came to her lips with both sweetness and fire. The song-like quality was run through with gravel and nails, an addition flowing from the bridge tattoo.

"Stop him now. Protect me."

She didn't recognize her own voice. The words hurt her throat as if she'd gargled sand, but the frantic energy of the guard was replaced with an eerie calmness. He pulled his weapon, and as the other clan member attempted to shove the gag in her mouth, he pulled the trigger with startling ease.

The blast at close range made her ears ring. When she opened her eyes, she saw a guard lying on the ground with a bloody hole in his chest, eyes unfocused in death. The clan member she'd charmed stared at his gun, the enchantment wearing off. She could see the decisions behind his eyes—kill her or flee to find help.

The venota stones woke to her voice, rising like tiny colored moons. The guard stared at them, not understanding their purpose until she flung one at his head. He managed to get a hand up, deflecting it against the wall, but she caught him with the second one right around the neck. Moriganne pummeled him with three stones, slamming him in the temple and knocking him clean out.
