‘Whoever put Parsons up to it scares him more than we do,’ said Chalke as they climbed the stairs back to the Incident Room.

‘Tosh Bibby owns the Black Dog hotel,’ said Leyden. ‘Perhaps he can lean on Parsons.’

‘Good point. I’ll ask Weaver to give him a ring.’

At five o’clock came the news that fingerprints had been successfully recovered from the Makarov, even though it had been immersed in water. The techies were full of themselves.

‘Yeah, yeah,’ said Leyden, taking the phone call. ‘Just tell us what you’ve found… Just one set of prints? No possibility that you might have…? Sorry, mate, had to ask.’

‘Well?’ asked Chalke.

‘There’re only Freddy Carter’s prints on the gun.’

‘That fits in with the theory that Carter was lying in wait for Joey,’ said Begley when she was told. ‘In the struggle, Starling turned the gun on Carter and it went off. We could settle for self-defence.’

When Andy Butterfield put this to Starling, he said, ‘Load of bollocks. I told you, I never saw Freddy Carter last night.’

‘By the way, your alibi’s here,’ said Butterfield. ‘In a cell, facing a charge of perverting the course of justice.’

‘Not my problem. You always get saddos wanting part of the action,’ said Starling.
