When she entered Nash’s room, she found him sitting on the bed staring at an open book. He looked his usual self now, poker-faced, without a care in the world.

He placed the book down on his lap and fixed his eyes on her. ‘Hey, what’s happening?’

‘Old Jameson’s got a hard-on.’

Nash laughed. ‘Didn’t take you long to get your hooks into him.’

‘Guys like him are easy.’

‘Let’s hope it lasts. He’s said nothing about payment.’

‘Perhaps he’ll let me stay for free.’

Nash shook his head. ‘Believe me, there’s no chance of that. You could screw that old goat all week and he’d still charge you.’

Mich smiled. ‘Are you all right now?’

‘What do you mean?’

‘Before, in the other room, you went as white as a sheet looking at the estuary.’

‘I’m all right. I don’t know what you’re talking about.’

Mich didn’t press it. It was something to save for later. Instead, she sat next to him on the bed. ‘I’m not complaining. I’m more than happy to have the room to myself.’ She stretched her arms and yawned. She felt sweaty and tired, a good, long rest was what she needed. She hadn’t slept well in ages. A natural sleep. A sleep unaided by tabs and booze.

Mich yawned. ‘I better spruce myself up, I suppose. Mr. Jameson has invited us for a drink.’

‘That’s nice, but we’re going to have to disappoint him.’

‘Why?’

‘Because we’re going out.’

‘Where?’

‘A few of the local pubs. We’ve work to do, remember. We need to find the boy’s mother and her boyfriend, start getting acquainted.’

Mich sighed. ‘Yeah, I guess we do. But I suppose we’ll get a drink at least.’

Nash stared at her for a second. ‘I wanted to speak to you about that.’

‘About what?’

‘Your drinking. I know it’s part of the job, but I want us to keep control of this. Enjoy yourself, but let’s keep any excesses down to a minimum. Any craziness can’t be for real. Everything has to be an act.’

‘What do you mean any craziness can’t be for real? What are you trying to say?’

Nash sighed. ‘I thought that was obvious. You know what you’re like when you drink.’

Mich stood up. ‘Screw you, Nash. Don’t talk to me like that.’

Nash held out his hands palms up. ‘I said nothing wrong, just telling you the truth that’s all.’

She turned her back on him and walked out. She paused at the doorway then turned to face him. ‘You need to be careful. Things can turn nasty when people talk about the truth.’

‘I know, especially people like Benny Bray.’

‘Go to hell, Nash,’ Mich said, then walked out into the hall, slamming the bedroom door behind her. She sat on the bed and sighed into her hands. She was sick of men telling her what to do. But what sickened her more was Nash’s hold over her. Perhaps after this job, he’d be true to his word. She sensed he wouldn’t. Men liked to be in control. She would play along, for now, try to do as she was told, sometimes fate rewarded the patient.
