Twigs crackling in the distance behind him let Adam know the hunting party was on his trail. Even with the huge head start, he couldnât get away fast enough. Deeper into the woods he went, hoping for salvation. To his right, a glimpse of a structure caught his attention and he ran towards it for a better look.
A shed.
The wooden building had faded in color from being exposed to the environment, splotched with shades of grey and rust. A few tall weeds grew around the edges at the base but the most important feature he noticed was the unlocked door. Rusty metal plates held on to an old bolt that lot its usefulness long ago. Drenched in sweat, Adam wrenched the door open and ran in.
Inside was huge. Directly in front of him was wide open space stopping shadow further in before a row of stalls. On either side of him were shelves, more stalls and piles of hay. His mind went through options, a virtual rolodex of ideas flipping at high speed.
Snap!
Hearing the break of wood just outside forced him to act. The piles of hay were stacked inside a wooden stall on his right. There was no visible entrance, but he went to it anyway. Some of the boards had worn loose so he jiggled one of them up enough for him to fit through. He settled down into the hay, burrowing into it to blend in, as the door swung open and Greg stood haloed by the passing sunlight.
Three of the hunters made their way into the shed, scanning the place for him. Adam wanted to squeeze his eyes shut but refused to lose sight of them in case he had to make a move. Still outside was Big Tits, Clint and bear dude standing guard. Each one took a gander checking out the vicinity probably hoping he would come out from the back.
No chance.
He may be a little green in the whole being chased department but he was no dummy. Years of movie watching taught him a few things. Dave stopped in the center, cocking his head up to one side, listening. After what felt like eternity, his head straightened and his gaze landed right on the pile of hay. He just nodded and Greg did the same.
âCome on out of there, now. No need to turn this into a situation. Good ol Jess here just gets a little overzealous when he goes in for a kill. Nothing to run away from.â Greg walked slowly towards him as he spoke.
Bullshit! Adam screamed in his head.
âJust grab him,â Bear dude Jess yelled and pushed his way in heading for him.
The pump action of a shotgun drew their attention and everyone stopped. From his view in the hay, he saw an old couple in their pajamas clinging to each other, the man holding the weapon a mere foot away from Clintâs face. Big Tits had a curious look on that pretty face: One that frightened him. Dave kept his stare on him, never wavering.
