SPENCER PERUSED THE crowded room and wondered if it was too soon to rescue Kate. The evening was every bit as trying as he had thought it would be. She was besieged by well-meaning relatives asking her everything from questions about her family to ones about her future plans.

Uncle Horace came right out and asked her if she was going to marry his nephew.

“Don’t badger her, Horace,” Spencer said. “She’s my guest.”

“I’m just asking.”

“Then don’t.”

“Does that mean the answer’s no?”

“It means I don’t want Kate being pressured by my family.”

“But we like her. There’s no harm in liking her, is there?”

Spencer almost couldn’t hold back a sigh at that point, but Kate tugged on his sleeve. She looked up at Horace. “There’s no harm at all in liking another person. I’m not offended in the least, and if Spencer and I decide to get married, we’ll let everyone know,” she said sweetly.

Horace gave her a satisfied smile and toddled away, looking for a glass of wine.

Spencer slipped an arm around her waist and walked with her. “You’re an angel. Have I told you that?”

Her laughter was low and sweet and incredulous. “I don’t think I’ve sprouted wings yet, no.”

“That’s just because they’re pinned to your back. You can’t see them like the rest of us can. Or your halo, either.” He brushed one finger over a silky strand of her hair. “It’s attached up here somewhere. I’m sorry about all that, by the way. Uncle Horace isn’t normally so bad. He’s just—”

“I know. He’s an overprotective Fairfield.”

Spencer chuckled. “I suppose that’s true, but I was going to say that he’s not able to handle wine all that well.”

“Me, neither. Don’t let me drink any more.”

He looked down at her empty glass and grinned. “Some men would view that as an opportunity.”

“Maybe, but not you. You’re not that kind of man. Spencer Fairfield looks after the weak and the elderly, and I’m pretty sure you look after mildly tipsy women, too. Isn’t that true?”

He shrugged. “I have my weaknesses, yes.”

“Or strengths. Poor Bridget.”

Spencer looked up at the frail redhead who was dancing with Connor and obviously not enjoying herself. “I wonder that she’s still here.”

“I don’t know, but I think she’s unhappy. Maybe she thought your brother would make her happy, but it’s not going to happen. She’s disappointed and maybe even a bit afraid of him.”

“Connor’s angry about something. For some reason I don’t understand, he’s hurting. Ordinarily, he’s a gentle man.”

She smiled. “And you would protect him if you could. Well, in spite of his frowns, I believe he is a gentle man, but I think Bridget needs more than a gentle man. And she’s upset because Connor’s not what she expected. Your grandmother wouldn’t have mentioned the scowls.”

“I don’t think Grandmother ever mentions our flaws. Maybe she doesn’t even admit we have any. Everything we do is seen through love-filtered glasses. But Connor doesn’t like it when she sets us up with dates. He was deeply affected by what happened to my father and grandmother, but in a different way.
