As an African American gay man in the early twentieth century, Pierce cared about building a community where people like him could feel safe and free to be themselves. In addition to maintaining the community of the Jenifer Street group, he also kept up long-distance letter writing with friends. One of his longest running correspondences was with Willard Motley, an African American writer who met Pierce on Madison’s Capitol Square near Pierce’s tailor shop. They wrote to each other for twenty-seven years.4 Motley’s letter below was sent to Pierce in Madison from Cuernavaca, Mexico, where Motley was living and writing at the time.
